How Much Does Rebar Cost?

#4 rebar — the most common size for residential slabs and footings — averages about $12 for a 20-foot stick in 2026, or roughly $0.60 per linear foot. Heavier sizes cost more. The table and calculator below help you estimate bars and tie wire for any project.

How this is calculated
  • Bars width-way = floor(20 ft × 12 ÷ 12 in) + 1 = 21
  • Bars length-way = floor(20 ft × 12 ÷ 12 in) + 1 = 21
  • Total rebar = 21 × 20 ft + 21 × 20 ft = 840 ft
  • Add 10% overlap & waste → 924 ft
  • Sticks = ceil(924 ft ÷ 20 ft) = 47
  • Tie points = 21 × 21 = 441

A grid needs one extra bar in each direction (the "bars + 1" rule) so both edges are covered.

Sticks include your overlap & waste allowance; lap splices typically overlap 40× the bar diameter.

Frequently asked questions

How much does rebar cost per linear foot?

#4 rebar (the most common size) averages about $0.60 per linear foot in 2026, based on a $12 price for a 20-foot stick at national home centers. Heavier #5 and #6 bar run proportionally more.

How much rebar do I need for a concrete slab?

A standard 10-inch rebar grid needs roughly 2.4 sticks per square foot of slab. Use our rebar calculator: enter slab dimensions and spacing, and it returns bars needed, total linear feet, and cost.

Can rebar be bent on-site?

Yes. A rebar bender (available at most tool rental shops) bends standard sizes cleanly. Home-center rebar comes in 20-foot lengths; most suppliers will cut to length for a small fee.

What size rebar for a concrete driveway?

Most residential driveways use #4 bar (½″) at a 12-inch grid. Heavier vehicles or soft subgrade may call for #5. Check your local code — some areas specify a minimum bar size.
